Men with HSV are prime targets for “miracle cure” marketing. You’ll see everything from lysine megadoses to colloidal silver and obscure herbs promising to “erase” herpes. None of these cure HSV. A few have reasonable evidence for reducing recurrence frequency or symptom severity; several have very limited data; a couple should be avoided outright.
Think of supplements as supporting actors. Antivirals, sleep, stress management, and safer sex are still the leading roles.

Supplements with Strong Evidence
Lysine (Amino Acid)
Lysine and arginine compete in viral replication pathways. Older clinical trials and reviews suggest lysine can reduce herpes recurrence frequency for some people, especially at higher daily doses.
Research: Several randomised trials found that daily L‑lysine (around 1,000–3,000 mg/day) reduced recurrence rates or improved subjective outcomes compared with placebo, though not all studies were positive. A large self‑report study of over 1,500 people found 88% considered supplemental lysine effective in reducing outbreaks or shortening healing time.
Dosing (common clinical patterns, not personal medical advice): 1,000 mg 2–3 times/day for prevention; 3,000 mg/day for short periods at first signs of an outbreak.
Cost: Typically inexpensive; generic L‑lysine capsules or powders are widely available.
Safety: Generally well tolerated at common doses; high doses can cause gastrointestinal upset. Long‑term very high dosing hasn’t been thoroughly studied, so stay within moderate ranges unless supervised.
How to use: Lysine appears most useful as an adjunct - especially if you’re not on daily antivirals or you want extra support around predictable trigger windows (stress, travel).
Zinc (Mineral)
Zinc supports innate and adaptive immunity and has antiviral effects in vitro. Topical zinc formulations have shown benefits for cold sores; oral zinc helps correct deficiency and support general immune function.
Immune mechanism: Zinc influences antiviral immunity, including interferon signalling and T‑cell function.
Outbreak reduction: Small trials using topical zinc oxide or zinc gluconate gels for herpes labialis reported shorter healing times and reduced symptoms compared with placebo, but evidence is limited and focused on oral lesions.
Dosing: For oral supplementation, many guidelines suggest 10–25 mg elemental zinc per day short‑term; avoid long‑term high doses (>40 mg/day) due to copper depletion risk.
Topical vs oral: Topical zinc preparations (gels, creams) can be useful adjuncts for cold sores. For genital HSV, topical zinc is less studied and may be irritating; discuss with a clinician before applying to sensitive mucosa.
How to use: Consider zinc if your diet is low in zinc or blood tests show deficiency; otherwise a modest daily dose or periodic use during high‑stress periods may be sufficient.
Vitamin D (Nutrient)
Vitamin D modulates immune responses and may influence herpesvirus reactivation risk.
Immune role: Vitamin D affects both innate and adaptive immunity, including production of antimicrobial peptides like cathelicidin, which can reduce HSV‑1 viral load in cell models.
Deficiency prevalence: Deficiency is common in northern latitudes and among people who spend most time indoors (i.e. many men in the UK).
Evidence: Direct HSV‑specific human data are limited, but broader herpesvirus research suggests lower vitamin D status is associated with higher risk of herpes zoster reactivation and other infections.
Supplementation: Typical maintenance doses range from 1,000–2,000 IU/day for many adults; some need more to correct deficiency, but that should be guided by blood tests and a doctor.
Testing: Ask your GP for a 25‑OH vitamin D test if you’re unsure. Adjust dose to keep levels in a healthy range, not just “not deficient.”

Supplements with Moderate Evidence
Propolis (Bee Product)
Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees with antiviral and anti‑inflammatory properties.
Research: Randomised trials of lip balms containing 0.5% propolis extract GH 2002 for herpes labialis found faster healing and better symptom control than aciclovir 5% cream in some studies.
Effectiveness: In these studies, propolis formulations reduced pain, itching, and healing time compared with standard topical aciclovir when used early.
How to source: Quality is critical; look for standardised extracts (like GH 2002 in the trials) rather than generic “propolis” of unknown composition.
Use case: Mostly for oral cold sores. Genital use should be discussed with a clinician due to sensitivity and lack of genital‑specific data.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
Lemon balm extracts are popular for cold sores.
Research: Several small studies suggest topical lemon balm cream can reduce symptoms and shorten healing time for herpes labialis compared with placebo.
Topical application: Typically applied several times daily at first sign of tingling or lesion formation.
Safety: Generally well tolerated; skin irritation is possible. Evidence is primarily for oral lesions; genital application is less studied.
Turmeric/Curcumin
Curcumin has anti‑inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.
Inflammation reduction: Curcumin can dampen inflammatory pathways (e.g. NF‑κB) and may support general immune balance.
HSV connection: Evidence is mostly lab‑based or from broad viral studies; there is not strong human HSV‑specific clinical data yet.
Bioavailability: Plain curcumin is poorly absorbed; formulations with piperine or specialised delivery systems (e.g. phytosomes) have better bioavailability.
Dosing: Common supplemental doses range 500–1,000 mg/day of enhanced‑absorption curcumin, taken with food and fats.

Supplements with Weak/No Evidence
Garlic
Garlic has general antimicrobial and immune‑supporting properties, but solid clinical data specific to HSV suppression are lacking. It’s fine as part of a diet; high‑dose supplements may cause GI upset and interact with anticoagulants.
Echinacea
Popular as an “immune booster,” but evidence is inconsistent even for common colds. There is no robust HSV‑specific benefit shown; long‑term use is not well studied.
St John’s Wort (Caution!)
St John’s Wort has significant interactions with many medications (including antivirals, antidepressants, HIV meds, and hormonal contraception) via liver enzyme induction. Topical preparations for cold sores exist but systemic use should be medical‑supervised.
Colloidal Silver (Avoid!)
Colloidal silver has no credible evidence for HSV benefit and carries real risk of argyria (irreversible skin discolouration) and potential organ toxicity. It can also interact with other medications. Skip it.

If you use supplements at all, start with basics:

High‑quality multivitamin if your diet is inconsistent.

These support general health and immune function, not HSV specifically.
HSV‑Specific Supplements
For many men, a reasonable HSV‑oriented stack looks like:
Lysine: 1,000–3,000 mg/day in divided doses, especially around trigger periods.
